Powered Parachutes
One of the fastest growing segments of sport aviation is the powered parachute, or PPC. The PPC is a cross between an ultralight and a paraglider. The typical PPC has an inflatable paraglider-type wing attached to a three-wheeled carriage on which is mounted a seat, an engine and a propellor. As the PPC moves forward, air is forced into the leading edge of the wing, causing it to fill and create lift. PPCs are very easy to fly. Most pilots need just a few hours of instruction, because the PPC has few control inputs. PPCs always fly at the same speed (about 18 mph), so the throttle setting affects only the aircraft altitude. Simple foot controls operate on the trailing edge of the wing, allowing for turning of the wing. Except for occasional throttle adjustments PPCs can be flown hands-off.. PPCs are limited in the type of weather they can comfortably handle. Since substantial weight is suspended from long lines, like a parachute, there is a lot of pendulum action if the air is bumpy. Also, PPC control is sloppy, to say the least, and the aircraft takes a few instants to react to control inputs. So, if it's windy, PPCs are not much fun, and can be scary. In calm air or light winds, they are a delight to fly. Because the wing is fabric, PPCs are easily stored and towed on a small trailer. Although two-place versions are available, unless used for instruction, the two-place versions must be registered and flown as experimental aircraft. |
